Commute--09/03/10
Way in, Kanakanak Road sidewalk at the Seventh Day Adventist Church drive.  A woman with black hair and at least my age (which is 47), drove her small white SUV (anyone notice a recurring theme of SUV drivers on this blog?) squarely onto the sidewalk from the church drive, stopped, and blocked the entire thing.  She was looking to her right (towards town) as she did this.  She did not see me, less...

Loose Dogs--09/01/10
Might as well start the month off with three loose dogs on the commute in.  Dogs 1 and 2, a long-haired black lab type (could it be a flat-coated retriever?) and a dog I’ve seen before in this neighborhood, and it’s companion, a chocolate lab (I think), were carousing around mile 4.5 on the Lake Road at 7:30 am, at the private road intersection with the Dillingham B&B bear sign. ...

To Blog or Not To Blog
Blogs are about opinions, and offer an excellent opportunity for opinions to be more far-reaching than one’s dog’s ears, say.  Not that dogs are not the best listeners in the world, as long as there is a tasty treat at the end of the monologues their owners trouble them with, but, their contribution to problem-solving is a bit minimal.  Here enters the larger cerebral cortex to limbic...

Loose Horns--08/26/10
Way home—EGV 931, small green wagon, honked at me as it passed at mile 1.2.  This same vehicle also honked I think it was two evenings ago, but at the time there was a lot of pedestrian traffic on the sidewalk, with some pedestrians waving to the honking driver, so I believed that the driver was honking at them.  However, last night, there were no pedestrians on the sidewalk at this time, so...

Commute--08/25/10, way home
After several of Quality’s gravel tracks passed me going northbound on the Lake Road last night, and after the last truck to pass me was out of sight ahead, I heard a truck honk their horn, several times.  I thought a truck was approaching behind me, but no traffic was approaching behind me.  I realized then, it was further up the road, and it sounded like it was the intersection with the...

Commute--08/23/10 Way home
As I pedaled northbound on the Lake Road, at around 6:15 pm, two young boys, about ages 6 and 10, pedaled southbound, in the middle of the road at mile 2.  Hill, curve, limited visibility, with their loose dog, also careening around the entire road.  The dog made a beeline for me, and I had time to say, “Is this your dog?” before they were past and the older of the two boys called...

Commute--08/23/10
Good to see Andrew Nelson last night on his bike!  If I can manage it, I’ll set up a group ride for Saturday.  I’ve had to go into work the last two Saturdays, but I’m hoping this weekend is different.  Those two white poodles walked by “Rambo” on the Kanakanak sidewalk are highly aggressive towards cyclists—they about pulled his arms out this morning when...

Group Ride--01/30/10
11:00 am—Paul, Bob, and me snowshoed in deepish snow to the beaver dam close to the big wide open tundra.  The dog was happy to be behind someone breaking trail.  It was a little less deep in the trees, and we used our ski tracks from several weeks ago (or longer) to help us get to the creek without too much zigzagging.  Caution was used crossing the creek, except for when Bob found a nice...

Commute--02/01/10-02/11/10
Crashed on my way in 02/03/10—coming down Kanakanak Road towards Gladden’s apartments.  A bit puzzled that I did, but I apparently hit a not very visible section of ice when I thought I was on pavement, and my speed was too high for it.  It was so fast, I don’t recall anything in between being and being down.  I landed on my left side, bruised my left elbow, and whiplashed my...

Loose Tongues--02/08/10
Way in—I just turned left onto D street from Kanakanak Road, was on the road shoulder, when the same white wagon type vehicle as described before passed me and honked.  It was a short single honk this time, not a repetitive or forever honk.  I identified who drove the vehicle on the weekend after seeing him in the post office parking lot and in the daylight.  Don’t know his name...

City Annexation--02/09/10
The 02/08/10 workshop was postponed until 02/09/10.  Sheinberg was telephonic, as was council member Bob Himschoot.  Council member Sue Mulkeit was not present, after telling Mayor Alice Ruby that the roads were too “bad” for her to drive in for.  Couldn’t Mulkeit call in then and be present telephonically?  Wouldn’t she want to be present at the last workshop prior to the...

City Annexation--01/27/10
The workshop on this evening included the materials needed to draft the petition.  Consultant Sheinberg was present.  After 10 months of meetings about this topic, with the last one resulting in just water being annexed, council member Keggy Tubbs brought up annexing land again.  He wondered if adding land in addition to water would make it more appealing to the Local Boundary Commission.  I was...

Loose Dog Report--02/10/10
Middle School/High School sidewalk, 12:15 pm—tannish mutt, medium sized, looking around, eventually followed someone across D street and into the L&M parking lot.  Not sure if it had a collar on. Way home, mile 5.2 Lake Road, 5:30 pm—Australian Shephard Hardin ran out of the Happy Tails driveway and came down to chase me.  It ran back towards its driveway as I proceeded...

Loose Dog Report--02/08/10
Way in, 7:25 am, after I turned left onto Seward Street and just passed Wells Fargo— a small black labbish dog materialized, running after me, with an orange collar on.  It zig-zagged about, in front of and behind cars, and followed me down work’s driveway.  It detoured onto Mel Osborne’s property.

Loose Dog Report--02/03/10
Way home, Mile 4.8 Lake Road, northbound—young black lab mix came running out of Mr. Clark’s driveway, running after, next to, ahead of, and on the other side of the road from me, skidding on the ice, past Happy Tails (she took a short detour there), then on to Beatrice’s driveway, where she discovered her young loose dog, and finally stopped chasing me.  I pedaled home, and...

Loose Dog Report--02/02/10
Way home, Waskey Road, 8:15 pm—Two small dogs Luckhurst came running out of their driveway, chased and barked at me, until Kyle Belleque’s driveway, which I really hoped they would turn into.  Alas, they didn’t.

Loose Dog Report--01/25/10
Wait, there’s more for this day.  There was a brownish mutt milling around the post office at about 12:30 pm, looking up at people, hoping someone would notice it and be kind to it.  Had a collar on. Mile 6.1 Lake Road, going home—black and brown mutt came running out of Beatrice Grewal’s house (formerly the Shelly Wallace house), to bark and chase me.  I stopped my bike,...

Loose Dog Report--01/25/10
Way in, mile 2.3 Lake Road, southbound lane, at the road where Wells Fargo rents a duplex, around 6:20 am—a small dog (by the sound of its bark), ran out of this road onto the Lake Road after me, barking, chasing.  I called the Wells Fargo bank manager later in the day to tell her what happened.  The Wells Fargo bank employee in the duplex owns a largish breed, not this dog, so it...

Loose Dog Report--01/18/10
Way home, mile 0.5 Waskey Road—a small dog came running out of the group home driveway, barking and chasing me.  Another icebiker confirmed who the dog belonged to, as it had also chased him.  Patti Luckhurst owns the dog.  It was either on this day or another day soon after, that two small dogs came running out from Patti’s driveway. I rode up to the front deck, with the dogs barking...

Loose Dog Report--01/15/10
Going home, about mile 5.5 Lake Road, 6pm—a truck drove southbound slowly, usually an indicator that there is a loose dog nearby.  But there wasn’t, not until about 1/4 mile further north.  Looked like a dark, longish coated breed. The only way I saw it (it was dark) was because of movement, not anything else.  The dog blended in with the dark surroundings and was a perfect target for...

Loose Dog Report--01/13/09
Mile 2, Lake Road, Inbound, around 6:50 am, Sassa Ruby house—medium sized tan husky mix came barreling out of the driveway, barking, growling, chasing me, and not responding at all to me yelling at it.  This is a repeat offender—I’ve reported this dog every time, to no avail apparently.  When I got to work, I called Sassa, and left a polite message about the incident, the...

Loose Tongues--01/12/09
Small white wagon—ride in, about 7:10 am, D street (past Napa)—I saw there was a car behind me that wouldn’t catch up with me before I turned left onto Seward Street (between UAF and Wells Fargo), so I correctly merged from the right shoulder into the right motorized vehicle lane, signaled for the left turn, and as I was turning onto Seward Street, the car driver honked at me...

6:45 am, Kanakanak Road sidewalk, between the airport curve and Gladden’s—Pat Walsh (USFW) jogging inbound on sidewalk with loose golden retriever.  Federal government employees apparently don’t have to follow the at large law, which says animals have to be on the other end of a physical leash from a competent handler on public property (and the handler has to be holding the...

City Governments and Cruelty to Animals
On a recent Tuesday (12/08/09 if my memory is correct), a City of Dillingham maintenance worker went to the City’s animal pound, and found 6 dead dogs.  The heat was off in the building.  The CSO, who is also the animal control officer, who I’ve reported numerous loose dogs to, had not been to the pound to care for the animals for some unknown amount of time.  He was suspended from his...
